Return Journey

Off-beat, Manchester

June 2008

Third performance of Territories – marking without visible trace and connecting with place within the context of a journey I began in Cumbria where I collected earth from two locations along the river Eden. At off-beat, I gave people a small bag of some of the earth from one of the locations. As I gave them the earth I whispered in their ear a statement relating to journey. Attached to the bag of earth was an invitation to participate in the action by adding to it something from their own body – hair, skin, urine, eye-lash, saliva etc – and then bringing it to the performance space.
During the performance I combined all the bags of earth and mixed it with a small pile of ash before carrying it on my back to return it to its original riverside locations.
